Icelandair is rejigging its structure of operational roles, and has recruited one of the founders of Icelandic budget carrier Play, Arnar Mar Magnusson.

Icelandair is discontinuing the role of chief operating officer, following the retirement of Sylvia Kristin Olafsdottir.

Chief executive Bogi Nils Bogason will directly oversee two functions which were previously part of the chief operating officer’s remit.

Magnusson, who served as chief executive of Play when it emerged in 2019, and then as chief operating officer, will take up the post of senior vice-president of flight operations.

Icelandair says the second function, senior vice-president of technical operations, will be the responsibility of maintenance head Leifur Gudmundsson.

Both Magnusson’s and Gudmundsson’s roles will be moved “closer” to the company’s executive committee, it adds.

Play, which had been competing with Icelandair, ceased operations in September.
