Romanian carrier HiSky is continuing its efforts to restore long-haul connections from Bucharest, with plans to open services to Chicago next year.

HiSky says the connection has been absent for 24 years.

Romanian flag-carrier Tarom had previously operated the route, before it axed its long-haul network.

HiSky re-opened a former Tarom link to New York last year with flights to JFK using an Airbus A330-200.

It states that its twice-weekly Chicago route will begin on 4 June 2026.

HiSky says the opening represents a “natural continuation” of its long-haul network expansion, as well as positioning the carrier as a “leading Eastern European operator” on North American non-stop routes.

“What some called risk, we called vision, and it turns out we were right,” insists chief executive Iulian Scorpan.

He highlights the strong Romanian and Moldovan community in Chicago, adding: “We realise that an entire generation has lacked the chance to maintain this direct link with the homeland.”
