Military systems provider L3Harris has unveiled a podded version of its electronic warfare system for Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters.
L3Harris revealed the new podded option for the Viper Shield system on 24 September at the annual Air & Space Forces Association conference near Washington, DC.
Originally developed in an internally integrated configuration, Viper Shield is a countermeasure system providing F-16s enhanced protection against modern threats.
L3Harris says the podded version of Viper Shield offers the same protection as the integrated option, but in a package that is quicker to install, resulting in reduced aircraft downtime.
“Future customers, especially those who operate the F-16 Block 50 or earlier, may prefer the flexibility of the Viper Shield external pod to increase aircraft survivability,” says Ed Zoiss, president of space and airborne Systems at L3Harris.
The company adds that the accessibility and easy aircraft separation offered by a pod allow reduced repair time and a faster return to service.
Both Viper Shield options are compatible with multiple F-16 variants, including the latest Block 70/72 new-build jets. Sustainment of the internal and podded Viper Shields are managed through commercial services contracts.
Currently, seven F-16 operators globally have fielded or ordered the Viper Shield system.
A competing system from Northrop Grumman called the Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite is separately in service with the US Air Force F-16 fleet.
