Spanish carrier Air Europa is aiming to build a fleet of 20 Boeing 737 Max jets by mid-2028, having taken its initial two from lessor AerCap.

The airline had originally ordered 20 737 Max 8s directly from Boeing in 2016.

AerCap disclosed, six years later, an agreement with Air Europa for 10 of the type – deliveries of which were originally scheduled to span 2024-26.

Air Europa took its first Max from the lessor in May this year, and indicated it would have 20 in 2027.

But with the introduction of its second, the airline has pushed back the timeline further, to mid-2028, with two more planned for this year and 12 arriving next year.

It says it is deploying the twinjets on medium-haul routes across the continent and will also use them for domestic services at some point.

“This continues the airline’s fleet renewal process, which completed its consolidation around exclusively Boeing models several years ago,” it states.

Boeing’s direct orders and deliveries backlog lists 18 aircraft outstanding for Air Europa.
